How to Sand Car Body Filler for a Smooth Repair
October 12, 2026How to Choose and Apply Automotive Clearcoat
October 12, 2026What epoxy primer is used for
Epoxy primer is commonly chosen when a repair needs a durable, sealed foundation over properly prepared metal or existing sound coatings. Its main purpose is to support adhesion and corrosion resistance within a compatible refinishing system. It is not a substitute for removing corrosion or correcting dents and filler work first.
When epoxy primer is a good choice
Consider epoxy primer after a repair has exposed bare steel or aluminium, when a panel needs to be protected before later work, or where the product system specifies an epoxy foundation. The exact suitability depends on substrate, coating compatibility and the manufacturer’s technical data sheet.
- Prepared bare metal repair areas.
- Panels that need a sealed base before further refinishing.
- Repairs requiring robust corrosion protection.
- Compatible multi-stage automotive paint systems.
Prepare the substrate first
Remove loose paint, corrosion, dust, silicone and grease before applying primer. Sand to the recommended grit and degrease with a suitable panel wipe. Do not apply over damp, contaminated or unstable surfaces. For full pre-paint preparation, use our car panel preparation guide.
Mix and apply according to the data sheet
Use the correct hardener and mixing ratio for the exact product. Spray-gun setup, pressure, flash time and film build all affect the result. Mix only what you can use within the stated pot life, apply controlled coats, and allow the product to flash as directed. Heavy wet coats may create runs or solvent retention.
Understand recoat and sanding windows
Epoxy primer products have specific recoat windows. Some may accept subsequent materials within a stated period without sanding; others must be sanded after curing. Do not assume rules from one brand or product apply to another. Check the technical data sheet before applying filler, high-build primer, basecoat or clearcoat.
Epoxy primer versus high-build primer
Epoxy primer provides a protective foundation; high-build primer is generally used to level fine sanding scratches and texture after repair shaping. They can appear in the same repair system but perform different jobs. Do not expect epoxy primer alone to hide deep scratches, pinholes or poorly shaped filler.
Our automotive primer guide explains how etch, epoxy and high-build primer differ.
Use it after filler repair work is sound
Before primer, body filler should be fully shaped and refined. Inspect for low spots and pinholes with a guide coat, then clean the surface. Our body filler sanding guide covers the correct shaping and sanding process.
