Common Car Paint Defects: Causes and Prevention
October 12, 2026When to Use Epoxy Primer in Car Repairs
October 12, 2026Start with a sound, prepared repair
Body filler should only be used after corrosion, loose paint and contamination have been removed. Wash and degrease the panel, then sand the repair area to create a clean mechanical key. A filler repair cannot compensate for weak metal, trapped rust or poor surface preparation.
Mix filler accurately
Use the hardener ratio stated by the manufacturer and mix on a clean non-porous board. Fold the filler and hardener together until the colour is uniform, avoiding vigorous whipping that can introduce air. Mix only the amount you can spread within the stated working time.
Apply thin, controlled layers
Use a clean spreader and apply firm pressure to push filler into the prepared surface. Build the repair in thin layers rather than one heavy application. Shape the repair slightly proud of the surrounding panel, but avoid excess material that will require unnecessary sanding.
For help choosing the correct material for the repair depth, read our car body filler guide.
Begin shaping at the correct cure stage
Start sanding only when the filler has cured as specified on its technical data sheet. Sanding too early can tear or clog the abrasive; waiting too long makes shaping slower. Temperature changes cure time, so check the product guidance rather than relying only on a fixed number of minutes.
Use a block and a logical grit sequence
A sanding block helps maintain the original panel shape and prevents finger grooves. Begin with the grit needed to level the repair, then refine gradually with finer grades. Cross-hatch sanding patterns make high and low areas easier to identify and stop the repair becoming wavy.
- Use the coarsest grit only long enough to shape the repair.
- Feather the surrounding paint edge smoothly.
- Use a guide coat to reveal pinholes, scratches and low spots.
- Do not press hard at the edge of the repair.
- Remove dust before applying the next product.
Check for pinholes and low areas
Run a clean hand lightly across the repair and inspect it under angled light. A guide coat will show low spots and sanding scratches clearly. Correct small imperfections with a suitable finishing filler or glazing product where the product system allows. Do not keep adding heavy filler to solve a surface-level defect.
Prepare for primer
Once the panel is shaped, refine the scratches to the primer manufacturer’s recommended grit. Degrease the area again and remove all dust. High-build primer can help level fine sanding marks, but it should be used over a properly shaped repair. See our automotive primer guide for the next stage.
